Historical Wargames, Demos & Reenactors
Historical wargaming has been a mainstay in The Gathering & Limerick for over 20 years. From the simpler, faster games like Bolt Action & DBA; to the sweeping epics of the likes of Field of Glory, DBMM or Age of Reason. They can take place on land; at sea; or in the air! Limerick has a rich history of warfare - as it's motto attests - A City Well Schooled In The Arts Of War - & you'll always find someone in Limerick to give battle on any scale, & Conclave 2017 will be the perfect place to indulge this!
Bolt Action Demo & Participation
Saturday 24th June
Conclave 2017's WWII action is upping the ante from the last few years & will be running another Demo & Participation battle! Full details will follow - but these are always popular & our own Bolt Action "Sarge" Simon Kennedy is always on hand to take command!
Bolt Action is a WWII 28mm "platoon level" miniatures tabletop wargame that is scenario driven. It has become very popular over it's short life span & is a great fun war game at a visually appealing scale. It also has the excellent addition of a "random" initiative system where players' units are "activated" via the blind drawing of their "order" dice from a bag.
This year's Bolt Action will see 2 scenarios played! 1 in the morning & 1 in the afternoon.
Scenario 1: Battle of Arracourt
This scenario will focus on the German 5th Panzer Army's counter attc against the gains made by U.S. 4th Armored Division in north-eastern France near the German Border (not far off from the infamous Battle of Nancy - as fought by Clint Eastwood & co. in "Kelly's Heroes"). Using the Tank Wars Supplement of Bolt Action, this game will have you command named tank aces (& novices) with various skills in a race for victory.
The Battle of Arracourt was a major clash between U.S. and German armoured forces near the town of Arracourt, Lorraine, France, between 18–29 September 1944, during World War II. As part of a counteroffensive against recent U.S. advances in France, the German 5th Panzer Army had as its objective the recapture of Lunéville and the elimination of the U.S. XII Corps bridgehead over the Moselle River at Dieulouard. With local superiority in troops and tanks, the Germans anticipated quick defeat of the defending Combat Command A (CCA) of the U.S. 4th Armored Division. However, due in part to poor German tactics and the terrain, the 4th Armored Division's CCA, in concert with U.S. tactical air forces, defeated two Panzer Brigades and elements of two Panzer divisions in a series of engagements over an eleven-day period.
Scenario 2: Battle of Prokhorovka
Also using the Tank Wars Supplement of Bolt Action this scenario will focus on the German advance on the city of Prokhorovka at the epic Battle of Kursk!
The Battle of Prokhorovka was fought on 12 July 1943 near Prokhorovka, 87 kilometres (54 miles) southeast of Kursk, in the Soviet Union, during the Second World War. Taking place on the Eastern Front, the fighting was part of the wider Battle of Kursk, and occurred when the 5th Guards Tank Army of the Soviet Red Army attacked the II SS-Panzer Corps of the German Wehrmacht in one of the largest tank battles in military history.

Battle of Chalons/Catalaunian Plain 451 AD Demo Battle (DBMM)
Saturday 24th June
The Munster Wargamers are going to re-fight the Battle of Chalons with multiple players. The lads have run demos before at previous Conclaves which were amazing visual & gaming displays. This effort will use THREE 6 foot by 4 foot tables, allowing for the fight in the centre AND the two flank actions on separate tables, & also allow for the movement of troops from one table to another. This will be a demo game using the DBMM rules system & will be a great spectacle!
The Battle of the Catalaunian Plains (or Fields), also called the Battle of the Campus Mauriacus, Battle of Châlons or the Battle of Maurica, took place on June 20, 451 AD, between a coalition led by the Roman general Flavius Aetius and the Visigothic king Theodoric I against the Huns and their vassals commanded by their king Attila. It was one of the last major military operations of the Western Roman Empire, although Germanic foederati composed the majority of the coalition army. Whether the battle was strategically conclusive is disputed: The Romans stopped the Huns' attempt to establish vassals in Roman Gaul, and installed Merovech as king of the Franks. However, the Huns successfully looted and pillaged much of Gaul and crippled the military capacity of the Romans and Visigoths. The Hunnic Empire was later dismantled by a coalition of their Germanic vassals at the Battle of Nedao in 454.
There will be 6 Commands (2 on each table) & each will be about 250 to 300 points (in DBMM terms), and at least 2 players to each table – preferably more!
